Susanne Schmidtmeier is Professor of Financial Management, Accounting, Auditing and Taxation at Pforzheim University. After studying business sciences at the University of Paderborn from 1985 to 1990, she earned her PhD as part of a project of the German Savings Banks and Giro Association on the standardization of investment advice through the use of neural networks.
Between 1994 and 2001, she worked in the national office of the auditing company EY. During this time, she passed the tax consultant and auditor exam and took over responsibility for the Independence division in Germany.
In Pforzheim, she was head of the Master’s program in International Finance & Accounting from 2002 to 2005. Since 2005, she has been the academic director of the university’s examination office. In this capacity, she was instrumental in developing the early warning system for students. She is a member of the university’s Central Examination Board as well as the Examination Board of the Faculty of Business and Law.
In 2007, she was appointed to the Board of Examiners for Tax Consultants at the Ministry of Finance of Baden-Württemberg for the first time, where she is still serving today.

Susanne Schmidtmeier is involved in research and practice projects in the areas of accounting and auditing as well as in financial management, in particular regarding the internationalization of accounting and group accounting. In this context, she has been involved in various research projects on the preparation and auditing of consolidated financial statements according to international law in practice, as well as on topics of national accounting, such as the implementation of the Accounting Law Modernization Act (BilMoG) in user practice.
Another research focus is on auditor independence and its significance in the context of the auditor’s professional practice. This is a subject area which is regularly challenged by case law, but which has also repeatedly prompted the legislature to intervene in the market, most recently through the introduction or tightening of the requirement of external rotation for auditors of certain companies. However, the associated goal of reducing the concentration of large audit mandates at a few large companies could not be achieved. Thus, the possibilities of taking further measures are already being intensively discussed.
Since completing her studies, Susanne Schmidtmeier has also been working on issues relating to the possibilities of using artificial intelligence (with a focus on neural networks) to standardize typical process flows of financial service providers (e. g. investment advice, creditworthiness checks, etc.). Here, too, she participated in various studies and research projects.
