(07231) 28-6601Katharina Werner is professor of economics at the Business School in Pforzheim. Her research focuses on the economics of education, inequality and political economy. She teaches courses in Micro- and Macroeconomics in bachelor's programmes and regularly offers seminars on economic policy topics such as expectation formation, equal opportunities and education policy. Katharina Werner studied Economic Tripos and Economic Research at the University of Cambridge and received her doctorate from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich. She also gained experience teaching at the Kennedy School at Harvard University in 2016/17 and 2021/22. Before joining Pforzheim Business School, she was deputy director of the Centre for Education Economics at the ifo Institute for Economic Research.
Katharina Werner’s research is in the field of education economics and political economy, especially at the intersection of labor and education economics. A focus of her work is on how society can leverage the education system and lifelong learning to respond to challenges while securing social cohesion. In ongoing projects, she investigates, for example, why certain groups participate less frequently in further training or retraining, and how citizens view the effects of automation for the labor market. She is also interested in how social norms, such as those relating to parenthood, shape occupational choice and career expectations among young people. In terms of methodology, Katharina Werner studies how information and incentives influence policy preferences and decision-making. For instance, she analyzes how information provision can change public opinion as it relates to public spending on education or the quality of public service provision.
