After receiving his high-school diploma at Kolleg St. Blasien and his service at the German Air Force, Prof. Dr. Robert Nothhelfer started his professional career with an apprenticeship in banking at the Deutsche Bank in Freiburg. After its completion he studied from 1992 untin 1997 economics in Freiburg and Bonn.

After his studies he started to work from 1997 until 2000 as a public accountant for BDO Südwesttreuhand Wirtschaftsprüfungsgesellschaft mbH and wrote his dissertation about "Learning processes in organizations". From 2001 until 2004 he worked for the corporate financial reporting of Bertelsmann AG in Gütersloh. Key issues were the transformation of the consolidated financial statements from German GAAP to IFRS and the implementation of a new consolidation software for the whole Bertelsmann group.

From 2004 until 2014, Prof. Dr. Nothhelfer worked in several financial / administrative functions for the Schwarz Group in Neckarsulm: at first for the central holding Schwarz Finanz- und Beteiligungs-GmbH & Co. KG (today Schwarz Dienstleistung GmbH & Co. KG) with the responsibility for accounting and reporting; key issues were here the transformation of the consolidated financial statements from German GAAP to IFRS and a far reaching standardization of reporting procedures. After that, he was as CFO for Lidl Germany responsible for Finance, Accounting and IT; after the data protection scandal 2008 he implemented a new data protection organisation and was responsible for all corresponding changes in operational procedures. From 2011 onwards, he started to implement a compliance and risk management system for Lidl International.

Since March 2014 he is Professor for business administration at the Pforzheim University.

Apart from a 6 month stay in England during his school time, Professor Dr. Nothhelfer attended in Summer 1994 the Harvard Summer School and worked in Summer 1998 on his dissertation at the Sloan School of Management of the Massachussett´s Institute of Technology.
