Harald Strotmann is Professor of Economics at Pforzheim University. From 2009 to 2014, he was head of the department of economics in the university‘s self-administration; since 2011 he is the director of the MBA International Management. At the beginning of the winter semester in 2014, Harald Strotmann was elected vice dean of the Business School and is responsible for international accreditation, strategy, and Master degree programs. Between 2001 and 2007, he was Scientific Director at the Institute for Applied Economic Research in Tubingen (IAW), where he led a variety of research projects at the juncture between politics and basic research. Examples are research projects focusing on the evaluation of the German Hartz IV reforms, projects contributing to the Poverty and Wealth Report of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs and a variety of other projects in the field of labour market research. Moreover, he was leading different basic research projects for the “German Research Foundation (DFG)”.
Harald Strotmann earned his doctoral degree from the University of Hohenheim with a microeconometric panel data study on labor market dynamics and the performance of start-ups in the manufacturing sector of Baden-Wuerttemberg. Microdata analyses, regional location analyses and questions of labour market and social policy are his focus in various research and publication projects. Since 2011 he has intensified, among others as a scientific evaluator of a women self-help group project in rural Karnataka (India), his research focus in the field of sustainable development.

One of Harald Strotmann’s main research interests is labor market research. For the German Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs he led two major research projects in which the organizational implementation of the German labour market Hartz IV reforms has been evaluated (“evaluation of the experimental clause of §6c SGB II”, cooperation partners ZEW Mannheim and ifo Institute in Munich). After moving from IAW Tübingen to Pforzheim University, he continued to collaborate in labor market evaluation projects such as the evaluation of minimum wages in specific industries and the “Kommunal-Kombi” in East Germany.
Many of his projects and publications examine the validity of theoretical hypotheses based upon empirical micro data analyses. He has, for example, examined determinants of international differences in tax compliance (for the Federal Ministry of Finance), a possible need for macroeconomic stimulus policy to support the effectiveness of the structural reforms of the EU Lisbon strategy (for the Federal Ministry of Economy) and the productivity effects of profit-sharing models (for the Ministry of Economics of Baden-Wuerttemberg). Many of his studies focus on the analysis of micro-level establishment panel data as, for example, in different projects on job and worker flow dynamics or on industrial economic start-up research (the field of his doctorate). While first interfaces to research on social sustainability have already existed in projects for the poverty and wealth reporting of the German Federal government, Harald Strotmann has expanded the scope of his research in this direction in recent years. In a study for Bayer CropScience, he currently evaluates whether and to what extent the company’s CSR activities can achieve a win-win situation for the rural population in India and the company itself.
