Xia Yian, Master's student of Transportation Design, is one of the three finalists of the international cooperation project "MUSTANG – A Grand Tour of Re-Imagination". It was initiated by the Ford China Design Center together with the CDS School of Transportation Design. He was able to turn his vehicle concept "Mustang Super Utility Concept" into a physical model in a one-week workshop in Shanghai. He then presented it at the Ford stand at the Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition (Auto Shanghai 2025).

Inspired by the legend of the Ford Mustang, the project invited young talents to create their own personal vision of the sports car. Since the start in December 2024, 25 design students from 22 international universities have taken part. After an interim review in February, eight of them were given the opportunity to attend a one-week workshop at the Ford China Design Center in Shanghai.

Under the daily 1:1 supervision of Ford designers, the participants developed their ideas into digital 3D models and used virtual reality technology to experience and optimize their concepts in a realistic way. In the final jury assessment, the three most convincing designs were selected and implemented as real models.

Xie Yian's "Mustang Super Utility Concept" takes the approach of combining traditional pony car elements with increased functionality. Inspired by the concept of the Utility Coupé, his design combines the flowing design language of a coupé with the practical usability of a pick-up. The all-electric layout allowed the rear of the vehicle to be spacious, achieving a balance between performance and function.

With his design, Xie Yian is one of the three finalists whose concepts were realized as physical models, alongside students from Tsinghua University (Beijing) and the Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts.
