The film musical is a form of cinema that overwhelms the senses: when characters begin to sing and their movements give way to choreography, a space opens up between reality and dreams. With the series “Dance, Glamour, Big Emotions: Musicals,” the Kommunale Kino Pforzheim is dedicating this year’s edition of “Films Without an Expiration Date” to the classics of the genre. The series kicks off on April 28 at 6 p.m. with the Cineastische Salon screening “Singin’ in the Rain.” In cooperation with the School of Design at Pforzheim University, the KoKi invites you to a post-screening discussion with Dr. Evelyn Echle, professor of cultural and media theory.
As a classic of Hollywood’s golden age, “Singin’ in the Rain” (USA, 1952) captures the magic of early sound films. The film by Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly is still considered one of the genre’s most significant works. Evelyn Echle from the School of Design will welcome guests from Pforzheim’s theater and music scene as part of the Cineastischer Salon. Following the screening, a discussion with the cultural practitioners will take place on stage, focusing on the exchange between film, theater, students, and the audience.
This year’s edition of “Films Without an Expiration Date” was curated by Philip Lawall (KoKi) and Evelyn Echle (Pforzheim University). Four films showcase the enormous range of the musical film: In addition to “Singin’ in the Rain,” “Moulin Rouge!,” “Golden Eighties,” and “Hairspray” will be screened.
Students receive free admission upon presentation of the Kulturflat.
