„To be human is to create systems of ornament“ (Colomina and Wigley, paraphrased), having the unique ability to put thoughts into symbols. Ornament is material and theoretical, general and specific, communicating between the individual and society. We examine the concept of ornament in a larger art historical and sociocultural context, investigating it as an access to the cultural, psychological, and symbolic properties of jewelry and the object.
