Inspired by the anatomy of an octopus and brought to life using modern 3D printing and traditional craftsmanship—this is what earned Johanna Gilbert the FIT Sport Design Award in the Sportswear Design / Footwear category. With “Bleaching Silence,” the accessory design student has created a shoe that combines stability and flexibility.
The innovation of the design, which was created in the third semester, lies in the fusion of biomimicry, digital manufacturing, and traditional craftsmanship. The octopus serves as inspiration, with the student translating its biological principles into both formal and functional elements.
Hybrid Design Approach: 3D Printing Meets Craftsmanship
The sole was developed using 3D modeling and additive manufacturing, which allows complex organic structures to be formed with high precision. The rounded protrusions on the sole are modeled after the octopus’s suction cups. They not only visually resemble the marine creature but also contribute to traction. Their flowing, sculptural form serves as a distinctive profile and provides grip.
In contrast, the upper was crafted using artisanal manufacturing techniques. It consists of handcrafted leather and was treated by hand with acrylic paint. This process creates an irregular, organic pattern reminiscent of an octopus’s chromatophore-rich skin and allows for subtle color nuances.
The shoe translates the presence and potential of an octopus into a sculptural, wearable object. The design represents a comprehensive exploration of the theme of metamorphosis and transfers the flexibility of the octopus to accessory design. Thus, “Bleaching Silence” maintains the tension between stability and possibility and views footwear not as a static object, but as an expression of ongoing change.
