He studied Civil Engineering, specializing in Construction Management, at the University of Karlsruhe (Germany), and later completed his PhD in Construction Managament and Economics at the University of Cape Town (South Africa).

Prior to joining the Pforzheim University Professor Martin worked in Switzerland and South Africa, both in academia and in industry. At the Cape Peninsula University of Technology he initiated and built up study course Facility Management, funded by the German Academic Exchange Programme (DAAD). Through his academic work he was able to publish several papers and received various awards.
