MBA Excursion – Bridging Academic Insight with Industry Experience
News

As part of the MBA in International Management program, our first-semester students participated in a two-day excursion designed to bring classroom concepts to life. By visiting leading companies across the jewelry, aviation, food and beverage, and technology sectors, students were able to connect management theory with real business practices. The trip highlighted how innovation, people strategy and digital transformation continue to shape organizations operating in a fast-changing global environment. It also underscored the value of learning directly from industry experts and alumni who shared their professional paths and practical expertise.
Day 1 – Craftsmanship, Digital Transformation, and Strategic Mindsets
The excursion began in Pforzheim with a visit to egf – Eduard G. Fidel GmbH, a renowned producer of fine jewelry. Students had the opportunity to observe the creation process behind wedding rings and eternity bands, gaining a detailed look at how precision, design, and quality come together in modern manufacturing. Presentations from Frank Walz (Sales Director) and Marcel Haas (Head of People & Culture) shed light on leadership, workforce development and the importance of aligning company culture with long-term business goals. Their insights connected strongly to ongoing MBA discussions on operations, organizational behavior, and strategic HR management.

In the afternoon, the group visited the Lufthansa Group headquarters in Frankfurt. Laura Oster (Product Manager) introduced students to the Digital Hangar and its role in enhancing customer journeys and operational efficiency through digital tools. Alumni Aswin Pottayil (Senior Manager Operations Strategy & Business Development) and Guilherme Gomes (Senior Risk Manager) shared their experiences working on agile projects, strategic initiatives and risk operations within an international aviation context. Their perspectives illustrated how adaptability, data-informed decision-making and cross-functional thinking support innovation in a complex global industry.
Day 2 – Global Talent Strategy, AI Integration, and Enterprise Technology
The second day provided further exposure to companies at the forefront of organizational transformation. The morning began with a visit to DöhlerGroup in Darmstadt, where students were welcomed by Jörg Thomas Bacherer (Chief People Officer). He spoke about the company’s international growth and dedication to maintaining a people-centered culture. Additional sessions with Stephan Schissler (Head of In-house Consulting) and Dr. Kevin Klann (AI Lead) offered insight into how Döhler is integrating AI and advanced technologies into its operations. These discussions showed how data-driven innovation and strategic planning contribute to the company’s global success.

In the afternoon, the group traveled to SAP in Walldorf, gaining firsthand exposure to one of the world’s most influential enterprise software environments. Margit Herrler (Campus Strategy and Engagement Lead DACH) introduced students to SAP’s culture, development opportunities, and
commitment to fostering inclusive and future-oriented teams. MBA alumni Mohit Raj Saxena (Security Audits and Compliance Specialist) and Ujwal Kolhe (Senior Solution Advisor) expanded on their work in customer experience, compliance, and risk management. Their perspectives highlighted how global technology leaders use collaboration, expertise, and customer-centric innovation to remain competitive.
Across both days, the excursion offered students a multifaceted look into how different industries approach leadership, innovation, and long-term strategy. Through direct conversations with professionals and alumni, students deepened their understanding of today’s business landscape and gained valuable perspectives to inform their future careers.
We extend our sincere gratitude to all companies and speakers for their hospitality, openness, and generous contributions to this year’s MBA excursion.
