Guest in Classroom: Innovating the Future - Hui Zhang, Group Vice President at NIO, Inspires MBA Students at Pforzheim University
News

Pforzheim University recently had the honour of welcoming our MBA alumnus Hui Zhang, Group Vice President at NIO and President of the EU-China Chamber of Commerce Automotive Working Group, as a guest speaker in the program. Mr. Zhang's visit offered a captivating insight into the rapidly evolving landscape of the global automotive industry and underscored the strategic role of innovation in shaping the future of mobility.
As an influential leader at NIO, a global smart electric vehicle manufacturer headquartered in China, Hui Zhang shared a comprehensive view on how the company integrates new ideas, technologies, and business strategies to stay ahead in an intensely competitive market. His lecture centered around innovation—defined not merely as invention, but as the practical realization of novel ideas across people, processes, products, business models, technologies, and markets.
A highlight of Mr. Zhang’s talk was the exploration of software-defined vehicles (SDVs)—an industry-defining shift in which cars are increasingly powered by software platforms that enable over-the-air updates, assisted by intelligent driving features, and seamless digital experiences. He also shed light on gigacasting, a groundbreaking production method using large-scale aluminum die-casting that reduces vehicle weight, enhances structural integrity, and significantly simplifies manufacturing.
In addition to product and process innovation, Mr. Zhang emphasized the critical role of Process 4.0, where digitalization, AI, and automation are revolutionizing traditional manufacturing paradigms. He discussed the use of big data analytics, AI-driven design, and the growing relevance of humanoid robots in intelligent production environments. These technologies enable not only cost efficiency and scalability but also set the stage for hyper-personalized customer experiences.
A strong advocate of environmental sustainability, Mr. Zhang elaborated on NIO’s integration of renewable energy sources and smart energy solutions to reduce its carbon footprint. He introduced students to NIO’s Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model, a pioneering business innovation that decouples battery ownership from the vehicle itself, lowering the entry cost for customers while promoting circularity and battery lifecycle optimization. The company’s battery swap technology, which enables a full battery exchange in just a few minutes, is another example of user-centric innovation aimed at eliminating range anxiety and maximizing convenience.
Mr. Zhang also introduced the audience to NIO’s SkyRide chassis system, a highly adaptable and intelligent vehicle platform designed for next-generation electric vehicles. This platform exemplifies the convergence of mechanical excellence and digital intelligence to deliver superior ride dynamics and safety.
Throughout his presentation, Hui Zhang reiterated that innovation must always begin with people—cultivating a mindset of curiosity, agility, and resilience. His insights into the interconnectedness of innovation across organizational dimensions resonated deeply with the students, offering both inspiration and practical lessons on leadership in a disruptive world.
As an alumnus of Pforzheim University and the MBA program, Hui Zhang’s visit was a full-circle moment—bridging the classroom and the boardroom and reminding future managers and business leaders of the power of visionary thinking, continuous learning, and global perspective.
