LEADING ACROSS CULTURES: INTERNATIONAL INTERNSHIP

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course consists of an eight week placement preceded by a 3-week course in German language (40 units) combined with several academic sessions. During the placement students learn how to interact in an international business environment with a particular focus on preparation for entering their professional work environment after graduation. Students will be assigned by the company to specific projects and will be responsible for successful completion of the project. They must describe the experience orally during the academic sessions and by writing a diary and a report.

CREDITS for students of Pennsylvania State University: 6 internship / 3 German course.
Students from other universities: Please contact your advisor.

CONTACT HOURS: 
- 250 clock hrs. on site in June and July.
- 40 units German language course level B1 (Deutsch als Fremdsprache / DaF), 3 weeks im May.
- Academic Course by Pforzheim University (other than DaF) including lectures on various topics (general and specific), seminar on cross cultural competencies, company visits, field trips and other activities, like ex. a 2-day trip to Munich and 4-day trip to Berlin.

LANGUAGE OF PRESENTATION: German, prerequisite: having completed at least 4 semesters of German before coming to Pforzheim, being near a B1 level of proficiency according to the Common European Framework (CEF).

REQUIRED WORK AND FORM OF ASSESSMENT: to get the credits students must
- successfully participate in the German Language Course (closed book final written examination)
- spent the required time onsite with the company and successfully complete the project/task defined in the beginning (evaluation provided by supervisor via midpoint progress meeting and final evaluation)
- write an Internship Journal. Fortnightly Journal entries track your learning and development at the placement. Entries should include work activities, critical incidents that gave you insight into the work environment, observations of how leadership is exercised, and reading responses. Each entry should be about 2 typewritten pages, double-spaced (approx. 500 words).
- write an analytical paper. The paper should include a description of your observations, differences noted between your home and host cultures that may have played a role in the situation and what you learned from the experience. The paper should be 8-10 typewritten pages, double spaced.
- actively participate in the academic sessions, give appropriate feedback, and take part in discussions.

TIME AND DURATION: second week of May / Juni / July

HOUSING: During the internship students are living in host families (subject of availality) in the area.
