• 1975–1978 studied at the University of Wuppertal

• 1978–1984 studied at the Polytechnic University of Duisburg

• 1984–1992 was a research assistant at the Institute of Energy Technology at the Polytechnic University, Duisburg, and later at the Department of Nuclear Safety and - Technology of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at RWTH Aachen University

• 1992 , Ph.D. (Dr.-Ing.) at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the RWTH Aachen University

• 1985–1989 project director process development of exhaust gas treatment at Kleinewefers Energy and Environmental GmbH in Krefeld

• 1989–1993 Vice President Development "chemical and thermal processes" in power plants AG Heidelberg
