Klaus Möller has been Professor of Distribution Logistics at Pforzheim University since 1996. In addition to holding courses in Purchasing and Logistics (B.Sc.) and Business Administration and Engineering (M.Sc.), he directs research studies in logistics at the Institute of Applied Research (IAF). He earned his doctoral degree in 1987 at the University of Karlsruhe (KIT) in industrial engineering. Afterward he worked at the PTV Group, where he was head of research and consulting, focusing on the acquisition and execution of EU research projects on fleet management. His work at the IAF focuses on applying information and communication technologies in logistics. He also develops teaching methods for logistics curricula, especially for case studies.

Klaus Möller works in logistics at the Institute for Applied Research (IAF). His interests lie in information and communication technologies for optimising logistics. In this work he has led two EU research projects on supply chain management with partners from the industrial and services sectors. The basic goal was to consolidate decentralised information along the supply chain so as to give participating companies the transparency needed for making their own planning decisions. In NETSTOCK (NETworked Approach for STOCK and service level optimisation) Professor Möller and his researchers used a prototype to identify the potential value in using a virtual inventory control system and in optimising the service level for a chain of affiliated SMEs in production and distribution.
The ROLLING STOCK project designed a monitoring system using a Webbased information platform to ensure transparency in the transportation chain, allowing stakeholders to respond quickly to unexpected events like disruptions. His work also focuses on uncovering the potential for optimising inventory logistics, especially in order picking, which is particularly labour intense. Automated  machinery in order picking remains limited in its application today. Aside from their considerable  investment costs, automated systems are in many situations unable to cope with the varying sizes and weights of inventory articles, with strong fluctuations in demand and with constantly changing inventory ranges. Hence in many cases companies must stick with traditional manual order picking,
where employees must physically collect articles in the ordered quantities. In the manual approach, companies try to handle bottlenecks by increasing their staff for temporary periods. But in practice this works only partly, as the more order pickers there are the more they get in each other’s way. Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) funded the RoKoKo project to identify methods for minimising these types of disruptions. The project found that for new systems to
be accepted – and long-term benefits ensured – employees require an adequate period of orientation. Using these results, companies can expand existing warehouse management systems (WMS) and ensure the successful implementation of new approaches.
