Anja Schmitz is Professor of Human Resources Management at Pforzheim University. She teaches in the degree programs Business Administration/Human Resource Management (B.Sc.) and Human Resources Management (M.Sc.) and is a member of the Human Resources Competence Center at Pforzheim University (HRCC), which combines the activities of teaching and research in the fields of human resource management. She is currently head of the Master’s program in Human Resource Management. She also teaches in the part-time MBA program at VWA Stuttgart. In addition to her teaching activities, she is a member of the Institute for Human Resource Research at Pforzheim University, where she conducts research on current topics in HR practice. A particular focus is on the areas of HR learning and development and organizational development: New Work, New Learning, Employee Experience.
Anja Schmitz studied Industrial and Organizational Psychology at the University of Heidelberg, as well as at Louisiana State University, USA, before she began her research work at the University Clinic for Anesthesiology in Heidelberg. There, she investigated teaching-learning processes in the area of anesthesia simulation and was involved in continuing education in the area of leadership and communication, and was also active in continuing education in higher education didactics.
After completing her doctorate on teaching-learning settings, she worked as a management consultant specializing in personnel and organizational development, potential analysis, and executive selection, and was responsible for the development of various consulting services. She then moved to the pharmaceutical industry, where she held various positions in HR Learning and Organizational Development and managed organizational development for different sites until her move to Pforzheim University. She is a trained systemic organizational consultant.

Anja Schmitz focuses on current developments in the field of human resource management, in particular on changes in the areas of learning and organizational development. In a world characterized by high dynamics and complexity, organizations are required to be flexible, adaptable and capable of learning. For his reason, the field of Human Resource Management is of particular importance. Anja Schmitz researches and advises organizations on how to deal with these developments, which are, for example, summarized under the terms New Learning, Employee Experience and Digital Leadership. She is concerned with the questions of how digital transformation and the associated forms of collaboration are changing work, learning and experiences in the workplace. The research findings support organizations in aligning HR with current and future requirements and thus providing the best possible support for the competitiveness of the organization as a whole. Learning in organizations will play an even more important role in the future than in the past. The changes in the corporate environment require continuous learning processes, both on an individual and on an organizational level. In order to foster these learning processes in the best possible way, organizations must focus on actively shaping the social and technological aspects of their learning ecosystem. Initial studies on this conducted at Pforzheim University show that governance and stakeholder management issues are particularly important, as are the role of leadership and the learning culture. At the technological level, questions of interoperability and data structure in particular need to be clarified in order to be able to evaluate the available information in a way that is beneficial. In various studies, Anja Schmitz examines how this is also changing the role of HR and, in particular, HR Learning and Development.
