Maknana: An Archaeology of New Media Art in the Arab World

Event - Diriyah Art Futures (DAF), Riad

Exhibition in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with works by Susan Hefuna
Maknana exhibition

Susan Hefuna, artist and professor at the School of Design, Pforzheim University, is part of the exhibition "Maknana" in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, which deals with the interplay of archaeology, technology and media art in the Arab world. Curated by Haytham Nawar and Ala Younis, the exhibition brings together over 40 artists from the MENA region – including renowned names such as Ahmed Mater, Mona Hatoum and Emily Jacir.

The Arabic term "maknana", which translates as automation, inspires the central question of the exhibition: How have Arab artists used, repurposed and questioned technology to form their own creative language?

"Maknana" is divided into four thematic areas - automation, autonomy, waves and glitch - and shows archive material, digital experiments and new commissioned works. The exhibition is accompanied by an extensive supporting program with talks, performances and workshops.

Developed by the Saudi Museums Commission in collaboration with Diriyah Co., DAF contributes to the global landscape of new media and digital art by integrating regional voices and pioneering practices in art, technology and innovation.
