Guest in Classroom #2: Dr. Winfried Müller, Member of the Board of Management | CFO, BMW Bank GmbH
News
It was an absolute delight to interact with Dr. Winfried Müller, CFO, BMW Bank GmbH on our campus. He began his talk by setting up the stage for the need for developing decision making abilities in complicated (which requires special knowledge and skill), complex (which requires change in perspective) and chaotic (which needs crisis management) times. Each situation calls for different leadership skills, hence understanding which situation the organization is in, is a good starting point.
Leadership in fact, has a lot to do with dealing with people for which, there is no thumb rule, or handbook to study. But what can be said with certainty, is that complex problems can be solved only with teams which are diverse in nature from a professional and cultural background point of view. And when the strength and motivation of each team member is cherished by creating an empowering and nurturing environment, it automatically leads to the team being successful. An encouraging corporate culture creates supportive team members, and supportive team members create an encouraging corporate culture.
Dr. Müller shared with us his insights on how he connects with people in the process of leading the organization in challenging times. At BMW Bank GmbH, they follow a systematic approach called FORDEC – Facts, Opinions, Risks and Benefits, Decision and Check, to build an action plan to deal with complex situations. Communication is the key. Having a balance between taking decisions confidently and being open for advice and suggestions from teammates helps a lot according to Dr. Müller. “Be humble and encouraging asking questions,” he said, since “curiosity builds strong foundations for innovative breakthroughs.”
On being asked about how to make sure one is doing justice to both professional and personal lives, Dr. Müller’s answer was something which we all will remember throughout our lives. He said: “Focus on doing what you like, keep your eyes and mind open and make notes when you come across something interesting that might help you at work. Surround yourself with people who give you energy, spend time with your loved ones, identify the sources that drain your energy and distance yourself from them. And for a healthy life: focus on your physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing. This helps in having an anchor in life.”
Thank you for inspiring us, Dr. Müller! We are grateful to you for an engaging interaction and look forward to staying connected with you.
