Study Degree Programs

Bachelor? Master?

In June 1999 29 European education ministers signed the Bologna Declaration on the establishment of a European Higher Education Area and the strengthening of European competitiveness in education worldwide. 40 European countries have joined since the follow-up conference in Berlin in 2003.

What is a Bachelor?
A Bachelor is an academic title which is awarded after 6-8 semesters of study (after 3-4 years). A Bachelor study program is short in comparison to others. A Bachelor is the first academic degree awarded in a tripartite study system (Bachelor, Master, Doctorate) which will be introduced in European universities (agreed by the Bologna Process). The aim of the Bachelor degree program is to prepare graduates for entry onto the employment market (“employability”) in various functions and operative areas.

What is a Master?
A Master study program can be taken after the award of a Bachelor degree. A Bachelor study program prepares graduates for entry onto the employment market and also provides them with the basics of an academic education. Students learn methodology, systematics, concepts, categories and structures as well as fundamental issues about their one or two subject areas.

The Master study program is completed in one or two subject areas and broadens academic knowledge and skills within this area. It prepares students for an academic position at a university and research establishments. In addition there is a wide range of employment opportunities which require a more extensive academic education. Due to their expert skills acquired master graduates are able to take up positions with leadership and supervisory responsibilities.
