A virtual vision of the campus through the eyes of the panorama viewer

Industrial engineers practice their skills in media projects

So close up you’d think you were actually there – since this week prospective students have had the opportunity to have a look at the Tiefenbronner Straße campus on the University website through the eyes of a panorama viewer.

Working on an interdisciplinary project with Professor Andreas Mazura, the budding industrial engineer, Jan Röthle, set up four spectacular interactive 3D panoramas, which allow the observer to have a 360° view over the campus. Thus it is possible, for example, to click through a winter landscape overlooking the University building on Tiefenbronner Straße or to observe the particular architectural features of the inside of the engineering building. The shots in the library and on the roof terrace of the engineering building in particular show the commanding position of the University above the rooftops of the city of Pforzheim.

A special procedure is required to compile these so called spherical panoramas through which all angles of vision, visible from one position, can be depicted. Several individual pictures are taken from the best strategic position by panning and tilting the camera between takes. A so-called nodal point adapter, which is affixed to the tripod of the camera, allows the entrance angles to be controlled from the right perspective in order to gain as realistic a panorama as possible. The next step is to join the individual pictures together with the corresponding software and optimize them using a picture processing program. A panorama player arranges the joined together pictures geometrically into a cubic format, comprising six sides of the camera position around a virtual cube.

The result is unbelievably high-quality 3D panoramas which provide the viewer with a virtual “campus feeling”, thanks to the exact work of Jan Röthle, an enthusiastic photographer in his free time.

Jan Röthle is a 7th semester student of industrial engineering. He has selected the “Computer Science and Media Technology” class as one of his mandatory electives.
