One crucial task in the future is to provide industries with sufficient low-cost and eco-friendly raw materials. This does not only concern energy sources. Other resources as well like special metals for high-tech developments come into focus now. In addition, the environmental impact of energy and material consumption must be measured and evaluated comprehensively.

The aim of resource efficiency is to use as little resources as possible at maximum benefit. This should be a matter of course for companies. However, this is not the case! In German producing companies there is a saving potential of 10-12% of the costs of resource input. In many other countries the inefficiency in production is even higher.

Technology plays an important part here, in production engineering as well as in the development of ecologically-beneficial products. However, technology is not everything! The management plays an important part as well. Such processes must be controlled and directed. The demand of highly-qualified professionals is therefore great!

The study program REM was created in the framework of the extension program University 2012 in order to emphasize these aspects in an interdisciplinary-oriented study program. Basis is a business administration study program with a strong focus on the topics of resources, environment and production engineering. For this reason a young and highly-qualified team of professors will be appointed, professionals who have made extensive experiences in sciences and in business life. The study program is mainly managed by the Institute for Industrial Ecology at Pforzheim University.
