Review "The Future Thinks Electric"

ISP Director School of Engineering Invited by Bell Labs in USA

Recently, Dr. Guy Fournier was invited by Bell Labs in Murray Hill, New Jersey to talk about his expertise in sustainable mobility and the integration of renewable energies into a smart grid of electric vehicles.

Lately, Bell Labs is working on the next technological concepts, amongst them there is a focus on "green" research in eco-sustainable technologies, smart networks and nanotechnology which enables new types of batteries.

This is a topic which occupies Dr. Guy Fournier in his research about synergies between electric mobility, power generation and information and communication technologies. Dr. Fournier determines that intelligent load and power management with a bidirectional communication with the grid (Vehicle to Grid or V2G) is currently the best option for sustainable mobility when it is combined with renewables.

Presenting his topic in Stuttgart in January he met Dr. Rainer Fechner, head of Bell Labs in Germany and member of the management board, Alcatel-Lucent in Germany who invited him to introduce his topic to a group of 20 research team leaders of Bell Labs.

Bell Labs - is a scientific research institution which belongs to Alcatel Lucent, one of the leading global manufacturer and supplier of telecommunication technology and network equipment. The Bell Lab(oratories) are part of the research and development department or, so to say, are the innovation arm of Alcatel-Lucent and have been operating continuously since 1925. The headquarters is seated in Murray Hill, New Jersey / USA. Furthermore they operate several research and development facilities worldwide, one is in Germany with main seat in Stuttgart. More than 15% of Alcatel Lucent’s revenues are invested into the research facilities of Bell Labs. Therefore, Bell Labs is one of the largest private research facilities worldwide.

Researchers at Bell Labs have received numerous awards, including seven Nobel Prizes in physics. Numerous patents were generated by Bell Labs. Their scientists and engineers have played a decisive role in inventing or perfecting most of the key communications technologies in use today, including transistors, digital networking and signal processing, lasers and fiber-optic communications systems, cellular telephony and touch-tone dialing.
